This year Shul of Marin (formerly Shabbos Shul) celebrates children and elders during High Holiday services. Rosh Hashana ( the Jewish New Year), Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) will be held September 29 through September October 9 at the Congregational Community Church in Tiburon.

Prayer, song, and dance mark these community gatherings which reflect the ten days of turning that occur during the start of each Jewish New Year. The Jewish calendar is lunar and this year’s festivities usher in the year 5769.

During Rosh Hashana the community will welcome children as teachers. As representatives of new beginnings which are at the heart of this special celebration, the youth will sing, dance and share with others their ideas and perspectives about life.

“Rosh Hashanah is a time to celebrate a new cycle of life. The joy and awe of gazing into an infant’s or child’s eyes reminds us that all of us, young and old alike are alive and living within the mystery we call life,” said Rabbi Natan Segal who co-founded Shul of Marin with his brother, Cantor Joseph 31 years ago.

Following Rosh Hashana, the head of the year, is Kol Nidre. The following day is Yom Kippur.

“This year we will focus on gleaning the wisdom of our elders. They hold a vision about impermanence and letting go and they teach us the virtues of patience and service,” noted Rabbi Segal who was ordained in 1977 by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi Yeshiva B'nai Or , Philadelphia, Pa. He is also a cantor, liturgist, artist, and counselor. The Shul of Marin is post-denominational and serves the unaffiliated Jewish community and other spiritual seekers.
